Sony is offering a firmware update for Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILCA-77M2).
Improvements:
The autofocus speed has been improved.
This update enables shooting movies in 60p/30p/24p* due to the XAVC S format that supports high bit rates.
*For NTSC model: 60p/30p/24p
For PAL model: 50p/25p(PAL mode),60p/30p/24p(NTSC mode)
* When shooting a movie in the XAVC S format, ensure that an SDXC card of Class 10 or faster is used after formatting the card using the unit updated with the system software. If you format the memory card, all the data will be erased. Please ensure that the data on the card is backed up before formatting.
* Refer to the Help Guide for the details of XAVC S movie shooting features.
Check the firmware version
Note: This update is intended for ILCA-77M2 cameras that currenltly have a System Firmware version 1.02 or earlier.
- Select Menu > Setup (6) > Version on the camera.
- The System Firmware version is displayed.
- If current version is 2.00, update is not required.

* Please close all other application software and deactivate the sleep mode on your computer before updating the system software.

Note: The upgrade can be performed only when the remaining battery level is (three marks) or more. We recommend that you use a fully charged battery or the AC Adaptor AC-PW10AM (Sold Separately).

Important Notes:
- When performing the system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM500H or AC Adaptor AC-PW10AM (Sold Separately).
- Do not remove the battery during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
- Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
- Do not cover the Eyepiece sensors during the update, otherwise, the LCD monitor may switch to the Viewfinder mode. If you can not see anything on the LCD monitor, please press FINDER/LCD button
Install
Details
- Start Firmware Updater
Download the file to your computer. Please save the downloaded file onto the Desktop of your computer (recommended).
For Windows 8/Windows 8.1 users:
Under the initial settings of Internet Explorer, the update file will be saved in the Downloads folder. Click the Desktop tile from the Start screen and find the downloaded file in the Downloads folder by using Explorer. - Close all currently running programs on your computer.
Double click Update_ILCA77M2V200.exe to start up Firmware Updater.
- Check the USB connection mode
- Turn ON the camera.
- Select Menu > Setup (4) > USB Connection
- Select Mass Storage
- Connect the camera to the computer
Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand. - Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
Note: "USB Mode" appears on the LCD monitor of the camera.
If the computer cannot find the camera, the message “ Could not find the camera for this update.” appears on the computer display. Try the following if this happens.
- Disconnect the USB cable and connect it again.
- If the computer has multiple USB terminals, try with the other terminals. (Your computer may have some USB terminals on the backside.)
- Sometimes when the camera is connected to the computer with the USB cable, the message to encourage rebooting the computer may appear on the computer display. In this case, remove the battery pack or AC adaptor from the camera, reboot the computer, and follow the procedures from “1. Start up Firmware Updater“.
- Confirm is displayed on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen.
- After confirming the above, click Next on Firmware Updater.

Note: When clicking on Next, do not cover the Eyepiece sensors during the update, otherwise, the LCD monitor may switch to the Viewfinder mode. If you can not see anything on the LCD monitor, please press FINDER/LCD button.
Note: From this step onwards, never turn off the camera until the firmware upgrade is completed. - Check if the updating is required
- After confirming the screens on the above steps, click Next.
The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the lower left part of the screen.
Upgrade is required
If the screen below appears, the upgrade is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click Finish. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, reinsert the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera again.

- After confirming Current version is Ver. 1.02 or earlier, click Next.
- After confirming the screens on the above steps, click Next.
- Reset the camera
- Click on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.
Notes:
- Please keep the USB cable connected even after stopping the USB connection on the computer with the above operation.
- Press the center of the multi-selector (the control button) to execute.
Note: The screen turns off when the center of the multi-selector is pressed. Please proceed to the next step. - Click Next on Firmware Updater.
- Click on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.
- Start the update
- After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the screen below appears.
- Click Run to start the upgrade. The progress bar appears while upgrading (approximately 10 minutes).
Note: Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.
- Complete the update
When the upgrade is completed, the camera will restart automatically. Make sure the camera is turned ON and wait until the LCD screen appears again. Click Finish when the LCD screen appears and disconnect the USB cable.
- Check the firmware version
Follow the instruction to confirm the firmware version is Ver. 2.00.- Press Menu > Setup (6) > Version on the camera.
- The System Firmware Ver. 2.00 is displayed.
