Preventing the computer from automatically restarting after Windows updates.

If the computer is configured to automatically download and install Windows updates, the system may restart without user interaction. The restart may cause you to lose unsaved files or data. To prevent Windows Update from automatically restarting after downloading and installing updates, follow the procedure below:

    1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, click Security.
    3. In the Security window, under Security Center, click Turn automatic updating on or off.
    4. In the Change settings window, click to select Download updates but let me choose whether to install them and then click OK.

Windows Update will continue to automatically download updates but you will be able to choose when to install the updates and restart the computer.
